MF 206 : An important Poshmark safety tip for first-time sellers
Updated: Aug 29, 2022
In this bonus short, I share an important safety tip for first-time sellers on Poshmark. More at www.bemovingforward.com.
Apply the lesson you learned as a kid about “stranger danger”
Since we’re getting into the details of setting up your first Poshmark listings, now is a good time to talk a little ecommerce safety.
When you create your first listings, it will resemble a social media post with options for people to post questions at the bottom. This is a great way for you to interact with potential buyers and Poshmark community at large. Most of the message posts will be honest, earnest questions about the item which you can reply to directly underneath. However, there is one type of message you should never respond to.
When we started in May 2018 with our first listings, we sometimes saw posts with people asking if the item was still available, asking us to contact a phone number or email address.
I immediately smelled “spam/scam” and if you happen to a see a message like that, your inner red flag should go up. Don’t respond, simply hit the 🚩button underneath the message and the mods will remove it right away.
Fortunately, I rarely see these types of spam/scam postings these days as Poshmark has been cracking down hard on spammers; catching and removing these posts right away (it’s a violation of their TOA to post email or phone numbers) but for those of you who are new, I wanted to let you know in case you get hit with these on some of your first listings.
Legit buyers will never have a reason to buy from you outside of Poshmark. For a buyer, it doesn’t cost them anything additional to buy within the app and the ecosystem is designed to protect both the buyer and seller. As for sellers, you don’t want the headaches of dealing with scams so stay within the app. You pay the commission fees to participate within a safe ecosystem.
We’ll dive into how the transactions work in the next couple of weeks but just remember, there’s no reason for you to ever engage outside of the app. It’s not worth the risk.
